A FAR FROM ORDINARY NINE HOLES:

The Grayslake Golf Course is a scenic, far from ordinary nine-hole, par-three course complete with a large dose of shot-making challenges.  Forced carries over hazards on five holes, deep, yawning bunkers, club-grabbing fescue and large berms surround severely contoured greens on most holes.  The largest green - reminiscent of the old course at Scotland's St. Andrews - is on holes two and four. Be careful: the significant contour and elevation changes on the greens can easily result in a four-putt.  Unpredictable winds make the course play surprisingly tough - wait until you try to hit a long iron over a water hazard into the signature fifth hole... with a 20 mph wind!  When your round is complete, you'll feel at home while you relax with a snack and a soft drink or beer in Grayslake Golf Course's clubhouse or overlooking the wetlands on the outside patio.

Grayslake Golf Course: Now Serving -- A Total Par-3 Challenge

While traveling westward in the middle of Lake County, IL, take Route 120 (Belvedere Road) to Route 83; turn right onto Route 83 and head north, then northwest on Route 83 to Lake Street; turn right onto Lake and drive due north to DRURY LANE. Follow this street - whose name is the same as the famous children's literary road - for 8-tenths of a mile to find that (even without any help from the Muffin Man) the Grayslake Community Park District has cooked up a tasty par-three confection called Grayslake Golf Course of Grayslake that is no piece of cake!

Grayslake Golf Course is the new 9-hole, all par-three course, wherein the length belies the challenge, as its recipe includes the ingredients of water, sand, fescue, and wind. Opening day for the 2001 season was March 31, but the course did get underway with a "soft opening" (trailer as clubhouse, and limited hours) back on September 15, 2000.

Challenging to its patrons, this 20-acre golf course was 'gifted' to the Grayslake Community Park District by Cambridge Homes, the developer of Grayslake’s new 360-home ‘adult housing community. Cambridge Homes hired Greg Martin, golf course architect from Batavia, IL, to design the course. Of the twenty acres of land set aside for the course, six acres are protected wetlands, and another three acres are detention storage, leaving just 11 acres of terra firma to route nine golf holes. Martin skillfully used the land AND the water in his placement of the routing, as the water acts as hazards in the middle of the property and the middle of the round.

Grayslake Golf Course

Total par for Grayslake Golf Course of Grayslake is 27. The total length of the course is 1187 yards; additionally, a second set of forward / junior tees offers a shorter total length of 965 yards for the entire course. The hole distances vary between 100 yards and 165 yards. A combination of sand, water, and mounding offer plenty of challenge on each hole. Bob Lashbrook, executive director of the Grayslake Community Park District and avid golfer himself, affirmed the course's allure.

"Our course is a broad-spectrum facility," he said. "And that's what makes it so great. Initially, I think we wanted to just serve primarily seniors and juniors, but as the ultimate product came out, it had evolved into a challenge for everybody."
Be sure to bring along at least one extra golf ball for your round at Grayslake Golf Course as water hazards are in play on five of the nine holes.

Acting to enhance the danger of the water hazards at Grayslake Golf Course, is the wind. First, the entire Cambridge property is situated in a rather open area. Second, the 20-acre parcel containing the course would be deemed 'wetlands', and, as such, other than willows, is not that amiable to tree growth. And thirdly, the Cambridge developers wouldn't want large trees blocking the 'golf course views' of their premium lots. Conclusion: fewer trees means more wind. Clinging tightly to this premise is the fact that Grayslake Golf Course's signature hole is number-5. While not the longest in actual length (hole number-8 is 10 yards longer), the fifth hole usually plays into the prevailing wind, and with its elevated tee, can play one, two, or three clubs more than its nominal 155 yard distance - over water!

Construction cost of the golf course was $1.5 million, and was paid for by Cambridge Homes. The Grayslake Community Park District erected the Grayslake Golf Course clubhouse for $175,000.

"The Grayslake Golf Course golf course project did not, does not, and will not ever cost the taxpayers of our district even one penny," says executive director Lashbrook. "Revenues from the golf course will eventually pay off the clubhouse expense, and will also pay for the upkeep of the course itself."

Surprisingly, even after hundreds of rounds at Grayslake Golf Course, there has yet to be a hole-in-one.

Grayslake Golf Course welcomes junior golfers; an adult must accompany juniors under the age of 12. The course hopes to start some leagues during 2001, but will try to schedule the league times during off-peak hours. Outings can be arranged by calling the course manager. Peak prices for 2001 (weekend, non-resident, adult) are $12 for 9-holes only, and an additional $8 for a nine-hole replay. Off-peak prices for 2001 can be as low as (weekday, resident, senior) $6 for nine-holes, and an additional $4 for a nine-hole replay.

Whether you play Grayslake Golf Course because it is fun or for its challenge or its reasonable price, you'll find the experience tasteful to your golfing palate.
