Press Release
Grayslake Community Park District

At a press conference in Oak Park on May 11, 2013, Governor Quinn announced the awarding of over $15 million to 45 different parks and recreation agencies throughout the state of Illinois from the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development, (OSLAD), grant program.  Amongst those grants was an award of $400,000 to the Grayslake Community Park District for the renovation of Jones Island Park on the northwest shore of Gray’s Lake.  The grant program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and is a highly competitive grant program that many agencies apply for on an annual basis.  The Jones Island project scope includes the replacement of one picnic shelter, the addition of a second shelter, a fully-accessible canoe and kayak launch pier, a new seawall on the lake side shoreline area of the park, an expanded beach area, flood reduction improvements and a fully accessible trail system through the park and to all of its amenities.

Ken Ryan, President of the Park District Board of Commissioners, commented “The Park District Board is thrilled to receive one of the OSLAD grants announced by the Governor and made available through the Illinois DNR.  The grant funds will greatly help the district in improving the drainage and add new amenities to Jones Island and Gray’s Lake, the jewel of the community”.

“The news regarding the grant is extremely exciting,” added Jeff Nehila, Executive Director of the park district.  “The project will enable the district to enhance an amazing community park and promote the ever-growing movement of physical activity and outdoor recreation”.
